The Toolbar

The toolbar appears on the top right corner of the screen. It can be accessed using either the stylus or the Pen keys.

Accessing the Toolbar

1.  Using the Stylus

ƒ   Tap the icon to open the toolbar item.

ƒ   Within the menu option, tap with the stylus to select an option or scroll up/down using the scrollbar icons.

ƒ   To de-select the toolbar, simply tap in a space outside the menu or toolbar.

2.  Using the Pen Keys

ƒ   Press ESC (the red key) to activate the toolbar. The leftmost active toolbar item will be highlighted.

ƒ   Use the right/left direction keys to scroll between the toolbar items. Press ENT to access the menu option.

ƒ   Scroll up/down within the menu using the up/down direction keys. Exit the menu by pressing Escape and then press Escape again to de-select the toolbar.

Toolbar Options

Back

Return to the previous screen. If you have cross-reference a word from a dictionary entry, the Back icon will take you back to the original dictionary entry.

 

Read Aloud

Hear text read aloud in all screens. Use the Voice Settings option in the Preferences menu to define speaker settings.

File Operations

Use this menu to open or delete files downloaded to the Pen using the PenExplorer.

Dictionary↔Thesaurus

Switch between dictionary and thesaurus entries in supported dictionaries. This menu item is inactivated if there are no thesaurus entries available for the selected word.

Alternative Entries

View a list of alternative dictionary entries for the selected word. This menu item is inactivated if there are no alternative entries available for the selected word.

History

View a list of the last 80 looked-up words. Select a word from the list to view it in the Word Screen. Upload the History list to your computer using the PenExplorer.

Edit

Access the Virtual Keyboard to modify scanned text or to insert new text. See Editing and Entering Text on page

14 for information on using the Virtual Keyboard.

Settings

The Settings menu contains the following options:        

Menu Option	Function
Enlarged Font	Use this option to switch between regular and enlarged display font. The Pen’s default setting is enlarged font.
Always Read Aloud	Use this option to change the speaker setting for reading text aloud. The Pen’s default setting is selected  which means that text is read aloud immediately after it is scanned or selected.

Menu Option	Function
Highlight Spoken Words	Use this option to modify the Pen’s highlight setting. The Pen’s default setting is selected   which means that each word is highlighted as it is read aloud.
Inverse	The Pen is set to scan dark text on a light background. Select this option to scan inverse text (white text on dark background).
Speak Paragraph/Word…	Use this option to decide how text is read aloud when activating the speaker in a file or dictionary entry. If Paragraph is selected, the entire section will be read aloud. If Word is selected, only the highlighted word will be read aloud.
Show Sentence/Word from File…	This setting defines what happens when extracting text from a file. If Sentence is selected, the sentence where the highlight is located will be extracted to the Text Screen. If Word is selected, the highlighted word will be extracted to the Word Screen.
Select Dictionary (Translation)…	View a list of bilingual dictionaries and change the default dictionary. Only available when there is more than one bilingual dictionary on the Pen.
Select Dictionary (Definition)…	View a list of available dictionaries for English definitions and change the default dictionary. Only available when there is more than one monolingual dictionary on the Pen.

Menu Option	Function
Control Data Access…	Use this option to lock dictionary and/or file access. Use the same option to unlock access and for help with retrieving forgotten passwords. See Locking Dictionary and File Access on page 47.
Reset History	Erase the History list of previously viewed words.
Preferences…	Display the Preferences menu (from the Pen Main Menu).

Help

The Help menu contains the following options:

Menu Option	Function
Pronunciation Guide	A guide to the pronunciation of words using the phonetics alphabet and symbols.
Abbreviations Guide	A guide to the abbreviations used in some dictionaries.
Icons…	An explanation of the icons and graphic indicators seen on the Pen screens.
Keys…	An explanation of the Pen keys and their functions.

 

Note: Only relevant icons and menu options will be available in each screen.

 

ReadingPen Screen Functions

The ReadingPen application has several different screens, each with different functions.

Text can be scanned into any screen when the red light at the tip of the Pen is blinking. Any text that has already been scanned will be over-written by the new text.

The last 80 words that you look up are saved into the History list which can be opened in any screen where the  icon appears in the toolbar. You can upload the History list to your computer using the PenExplorer. See The PenExplorer on page 52.

 

The Help () menu can be accessed from the toolbar in every careen. It contains an explanation of all the icons and indicators used in each application as well as an explanation of Pen key functions.

 

Input Screen

The Input Screen appears when you first enter the ReadingPen application from the Pen Main Menu.

Input Screen Functions

1.  Scan/enter text

Scan text into the ReadingPen application, or enter text using the Virtual Keyboard ().

 

2.  Open a file

Use the File Operations () menu to open a file for viewing in the File Screen. Files are downloaded to the Pen using the PenExplorer. See The PenExplorer on page 52.

 

File Screen

The File Screen appears when opening a file using the File Operations () menu. Scroll through the text using the up/down direction keys or by tapping on the scroll arrows at the bottom-right of the screen with the stylus. Select  to return to the Input Screen.

 

Downloading Files to the Pen

Download files to the Pen using the PenExplorer. See The PenExplorer on page 52.

 

File Screen Functions

1.  Hear text read aloud

Tap on the  icon to hear the entire paragraph read aloud. Each word is highlighted as it is read.

The default reading settings are Highlight Spoken Words and Speak Paragraph. Change these settings by de-selecting the options in the Settings () menu. You can choose whether to read the entire paragraph or individual words, and whether words being read aloud are highlighted as they are read aloud.

 

2.  View text in Text Screen/Word Screen

Tap a highlighted word or press ENT to see the sentence in the Text Screen. From the Text Screen access the Word Screen by selecting the word you wish to view (press ENT or tap on highlighted word). If the sentence is very long, sections of up to 80 characters will be transferred at a time.

The default text transfer setting is Show Sentence from File. You can change this in the Settings () menu which gives you the option of transferring individual word straight to the Word Screen.

 

Text Screen

The Text Screen appears after scanning or entering more than one word, or when selecting a word from a file when the file setting is Show Sentence from File.

 

Text Screen Functions

 

1.  Hear text read aloud

Tap on the  icon to hear the entire sentence read aloud. Each word is highlighted as it is read. The default reading settings are Always Read Aloud and Highlight Spoken Words. Change these settings by de-selecting the options in the Settings () menu.

Scroll through the scanned text using the right/left direction keys or by tapping on the scrollbars at the bottom-right of the screen with the stylus.

 

2.  View word or phrase in Word Screen

Select a word from the Text Screen by tapping on the highlighted word with the stylus or pressing ENT. You will reach the Word Screen.

 

Word Screen

The Word Screen appears after scanning/entering a single word, after scanning a line and selecting one word from the line or after selecting a word from a file, when the file setting is Show Word from File.

 

Word Screen Functions

1.  Hear the word read aloud

Tap on the  icon or press ENT to hear the word read aloud.

2.  Spell the word aloud

 Tap on the   icon or press the right direction key to hear the word spelled aloud. Press ESC to cancel.

 3.  View the syllabic division of the word

 Tap on the   icon or press the left direction key to view the syllabic division of the word.

 If the word contains only one syllable, or if the scanned word is an inflected form that is not included in the dictionary, the inactive icon   will be seen.

4.  Translate the word

 Tap on the    icon or press the up direction key to translate the word. The translation from the bilingual dictionary is displayed in the Dictionary Screen.

  If there is no translation available for the word, or if the dictionary access is locked, the  icon will be seen.

 Select  or press the up direction key from the beginning of the translation to return to the Word Screen.

5.  Define the word and access the thesaurus

 Tap on the    icon or press the down direction key to view the English definition of the word. The dictionary entry is displayed in the Dictionary Screen.

 Use the   icon or the left direction key to toggle syllable and regular view.

If dictionary access is locked, the       icon will be seen. 

Select  or press the up direction key from the beginning of the definition to return to the Word Screen.

Tap on the  icon to view the corresponding thesaurus entry for the word. If there is no corresponding thesaurus entry, the  icon will be seen.

 

Dictionary Screen (Translation/Definition)

The Dictionary Screen appears when accessing the definition/translation from the Word Screen.

It displays English definitions and thesaurus entries and translations from the bilingual dictionary

 

Accessing the Dictionaries

 

1.   Bilingual Dictionary

 Access the translation by tapping on the  icon or pressing the up direction key in the Word Screen.

 

2.   Dictionary Definition (English)

Access the definition by tapping on the icon or pressing the down direction key in the Word Screen.

 

3.   Thesaurus Entries

The thesaurus entries are accessible only through the English definition entries displayed in the Dictionary Screen.

 

To switch between dictionary and thesaurus entries:

a.   Using the toolbar:

The  icon indicates that there is a corresponding thesaurus entry for the dictionary entry. Use this icon to switch between dictionary and thesaurus entries for the current word.

If there is no corresponding thesaurus entry, the  indicator will be seen.

 

Dictionary Screen Functions

 

1.  Hear the current word read aloud

Tap on the  icon to hear the word read aloud.

Note: If highlight mode is activated (one of the words in the entry appears highlighted), press ESC to deactivate the highlight mode.

 

2.  Hear sections of text read aloud

This function is only available for dictionaries which contain voice support.

To hear sections of dictionary entries read aloud:

a.   Scroll to the section you wish to hear read aloud.

b.   Press ENT to activate highlight mode. The first word on the screen that can be spoken will be highlighted.

c.   Tap on the  icon to hear the section read aloud. Each word is highlighted as it is read aloud. Press ESC to abort the reading.

d.   When the section finishes reading the highlight will move to the next section. Tap on the  icon to hear the next section read aloud.

e.   Press ESC to de-activate highlight mode.

The default setting is Highlight Spoken Words. Words on screen are highlighted as they are read, and the screen scrolls accordingly. If Highlight Spoken Words is de-selected, the words will not be highlighted as they are read, and the screen will not scroll.

 

3.  Switch between complete and abridged dictionary views

The definition and thesaurus entries are available in two views: abridged and complete.

• The abridged view shows only the basic elements of the entry. This is the default view, indicated by the  icon on the right of the screen. Tap on the  icon to switch to complete view.

• The complete view contains additional text elements, such as phonetic symbols and word histories. The  icon on the right of the screen indicates that the view is complete. Tap on the  icon to switch to abridged view.

 

4.  View Alternative Entries

If the word you are accessing has more than one definition or translation, the  icon will appear in the toolbar. If the current word has no alternative entries, the  indicator will appear.

Tap on the icon to open the word list. Select the option you want to view and it will appear in the Dictionary Screen.

 

5.  Cross-reference from within the current entry When viewing a definition or translation, you can also look up words from within the current entry.

If you are in a thesaurus entry and there is no corresponding thesaurus entry for the word you want to cross-reference, you will be taken directly to the definition.

 

 

c.   Tap on the highlighted word or press ENT. The highlighted word will appear in the Word Screen.

d.   In the Word Screen: Hear the word read aloud, spelled aloud and see the syllable division. Access either the definition or translation.

e.   Select  to return to the original dictionary entry from the Word Screen or the Dictionary Screen.

 

Note: You can cross-reference as many times as you wish from the Dictionary Screen (i.e. cross-reference from within a cross-reference,) but selecting  will take you back to the original dictionary entry only.

 

Cross-referencing from the Contents Index in Thesaurus Entries

Words from the Contents Index are seen in small caps within the thesaurus entry.

When cross-referencing to these words, some functions are unavailable in the Word Screen.

ƒ   The bilingual dictionary is unavailable.

ƒ   Syllabic division is unavailable.

ƒ   Only the thesaurus entry is available in the Dictionary Screen.

Dictionary Entries

The dictionary entries contain various elements. These examples are taken from the AHD College and English to Spanish dictionaries.

Not all elements are seen in every dictionary.

1.    Headword

The selected word or derivative of the selected word. Includes headwords made up of more than one word.

The headword ‘hello’

The word ‘ate’ is a derivative of the headword ‘eat’

The compound headword 'cross-country skiing'

 

2.    Homonyms

Two or more words which are spelled the same but have different meanings.

The Alternative Entries list for the homonym ‘desert’

 

3.    Phonetics

The phonetic transcription of the headword. This can be seen when the dictionary entries are displayed in complete form.

4.    Translations

Some words may have additional meanings when combined with other words. These can be viewed by scrolling through the dictionary definition of the particular word.

5.    Definitions

If the headword has more than one definition for a particular part of speech, each definition is numbered, with the most common definition appearing first.

6.    Parts of Speech

Categories of words that describe their specific grammatical function, e.g. nouns, verbs and adjectives. Some dictionary entries contain several parts of speech.

7.     Idioms and phrasal verbs

Expressions or phrases usually composed of a sequence of words. They can be identified:

a.  Automatically within a sentence (scanned/typed).

b.  By scrolling through the translation of the first word of the sequence.

When you scan or enter an idiom or phrasal verb, it will appear in the Text Screen. Highlight the first word of the sequence and tap on it with the stylus or press ENT. The entire sequence will appear in the Word Screen. This will only occur if the sequence has a corresponding dictionary entry.

8.    Labels

Labels describe a specific field in which the headword is used, e.g. music.

9.    and    indicators

Indicate that a thesaurus entry is available for the current headword. Pressing the left direction key twice from the complete view and once from the abridged view will access the thesaurus entry.

 

10.   and    indicators

Indicate that you are in the thesaurus entry. Pressing the right direction key twice from the complete view and once from the abridged view will access the dictionary definition.

 

11.  Alternative Spelling of Headwords

If the headword can be spelled in more than one way, the alternative spelling is shown beside the headword.

Additional Elements from the Complete ictionary and Thesaurus Entries

 

1.    Inflected Forms and their Syllables

An inflected form is created by adding letters to the base form of a word to create different usages. The inflected forms of the headword appear below the definitions. They appear in bold, with syllabic division shown using dots or stress marks.

2.    Sample Sentences

An example that shows how to use the headword in a sentence.

Locking Dictionary and File Access You can lock access to the Pen dictionaries and files using the Control Data Access option from the Settings () menu in the ReadingPen application.

1.    Locking Access

To lock the dictionary and/or file access:

1.  Select the  icon in the toolbar.

2.  Select Control Data Access to open the menu.

3.  There are three options to choose from. You can either lock the dictionary access, the file access or both. Choose the option you wish to use.

4.  The password screen will appear. Use the stylus to enter a four-number password. Press ENT or tap on the  key to save the password.

5.  Write down your password.

If you have chosen one of the options that lock dictionary access, the  indicator will appear in all relevant screens.

 

Locking dictionary access will also lock the dictionaries in the Games application. Translations and definitions will not be available until the dictionary is unlocked.

2.    Unlocking Access

To unlock the dictionary and/or file access:

1.  Go to Settings/Control Data Access and select Unlock Access.

2.  The password screen will appear. Use the stylus to enter your four-number password. Press ENT or tap on the  key. This will unlock the Pen.

3.    Retrieve Lost Password

If you have forgotten your password:

1.  Go to Settings/Control Data Access and select Retrieve Forgotten Password.

2.  A message will appear with the recovery code.

Write the code down.

3.  Go to the Pen Main Menu and open the Information menu.

4.  Go to Serial Number and write down your Pen’s serial number.

5.  Send an email to usa.support@wizcomtech.com.

Include the recovery code and the serial number in the email. Support will use this information to send you your password.
